Ultrasonication provides an optimal reactive environment, when combined with certain chemicals, that oxidizes the sulphur compounds in the oil phase faster, completely and highly selectively to sulfones. The water soluble catalyst used in our process, further supports the oxidation process.

For heavier fuel oils the larger molecular size of sulfones, now containing a hydrocarbon non-sulfonic fraction much larger, limits solubility considerably.

IUT technology solves this issue by re-configuring and augmenting the amount of ultrasonification and soluble catalyst used (which is a different process to the removal of sulphur in lighter fuel oils) , thereby removing the sulfones leaving the hydrocarbon molecule deprived of sulphur.
